HARVEST: Mother Nature was really on a tear this year. A warm, dry spring caused early bud break and one of the shortest bloom periods in memory. The record breaking rainfall on June 8th did not affect fruit set, but the 116 degree F day on June 14th did major damage. These high temperatures were experienced throughout Napa and Sonoma Counties and major blocks of all grape varieties were burned from the bottom up. One particular vineyard that I viewed looked as if Napalm had been dropped. Every leaf was scorched and shriveled (there was certainly some damage to my vineyard sites and blocks as well. We responded to this affront by Mother Nature by going yet again, through the vineyard and cutting off any and all sunburned or damaged fruit). August brought more normal heat and some record low daytime high temperatures with low clouds, sparse sun, and some unseasonable showers. Harvest dates were scattered and impossible to predict. It was a site by site decision. Beer of choice: Corona sin lima por favor.
