1997 HARVEST: This was the harvest of some of the biggest yields and the highest prices in the cabernet business that is. Pinots were trimmed down early to the usual 3 tons per acres (except Bacigalupi, which naturally crops low, 1-1.2 tons, due to its age). Spring was warm and dry and encouraged a good fruit set and ideal ripening conditions with vines well ahead of normal. Hot periods were modest and fruit quality was enhanced by moderate temperatures. When the first rains hit on August 20th the Bacigalupi was in and the rest of the grapes were just days behind. The warm spring and early summer had pushed sugars up and ripeness was achieved but without the preferred long hang time. Beer of choice: A wimpy year, a wimpy beer, MGD.
